Wildfires are burning through the coastal cities of Viña del Mar and Valparaíso in central Chile. Blazes have destroyed huge swaths of land and forced evacuations across the region. Hundreds of firefighters are on the ground in an all-out effort to control the flames. A regional state of emergency has been declared as more than 15,000 homes have been affected, and more than 100 people have lost their lives.
WCK’s teams are on the ground working quickly to identify all pockets of need. We are providing sandwiches and water to people who have lost their homes and are working with local restaurant partners to begin cooking more meals as soon as possible. This is our third climate-related response in Chile in the past 12 months.
The climate crisis continues to induce extreme weather events, increasing their frequency and the impact they have on affected populations, and leads to most of the disasters to which WCK responds. Our Climate Disaster Fund (CDF), allows us to continue to respond with the urgency of now to destructive weather events spurred by the climate crisis.
WCK is first to the frontlines, providing meals in response to humanitarian, climate, and community crises. When disaster strikes, WCK’s Relief Team mobilizes to the frontlines with the urgency of now to start cooking and provide meals to people in need. By partnering with organizations on the ground and activating a network of local restaurants, food trucks, or emergency kitchens, WCK serves comforting meals to survivors of disasters quickly and effectively. We know that good food provides not only nourishment, but also comfort and hope, especially in times of crisis.
