Responding to the Medication Crisis in Lebanon

by International Medical Corps

More than a year ago, Lebanon was rocked when a massive explosion in the port ripped through Beirut. Lebanon is once again reeling from a tanker exploding in Akkar, killing dozens of people and injuring many more. This tragedy comes as the country in the throes of a devastating economic crisis. The situation has affected the population on all levels and most notably on the access to essential commodities, including medication. Prices have increased by several folds when available at all.

This crisis has left the 7 million inhabitants of Lebanon, including approximately 855,000 Syrian refugees in danger, with limited to no access to medication. Shortages have been noted in all categories, dosages and forms of medication including: medications used to treat acute diseases in primary healthcare, non-communicable diseases, and cancer and immunology diseases.

International Medical Corps is working alongside the Ministry of Public Health and partners to address this major need and provide critical medications and medical supplies. We have been working in Lebanon since 2006, and maintain a deep understanding of the healthcare system. Illustrating our reach, we served approximately 44,000 patients with healthcare each month and 1,300 people with mental healthcare each month in 2020.

Your gift today will ensure help International Medical Corps address the medical needs in Lebanon.

*Note for recurring donations: Once we have determined that the community can continue to respond to the after-effects of this emergency without us, we will scale back our response efforts. At that time, we will redirect your future donations to where it is needed most to help us respond to future outbreaks of conflict, disease or disaster.
