AFGHANISTAN OPERATIONAL FACTS & FIGURES 2023

The ICRC continued to address the needs generated by the struggling economy and the consequences of decades of conflict and violence. Many activities were carried out with the Afghan Red Crescent Society; it received capacity-building support from the ICRC, including in areas such as restoring family links and raising awareness of the dangers of mines/ERW.

Supporting Healthcare system

* 581,548 patients, mostly women and children, received primary health care at 47 health
facilities of the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) supported by the ICRC
* 155,135 doses of routine vaccinations were administered at 46 ARCS-supported health
facilities
* 5,352 malnourished children benefited from the ARCS nutrition program supported by the ICRC in 46 basic healthcare clinics
* 574 patients benefited from mental health and psycho-social support (MHPSS) services at primary-health-care centers in Kandahar and Lashkar Gah
* 252 bottles of medicated lotion were donated to Kunduz Provincial Public Health
Directorate to manage scabies outbreak in the province
* 33 hospitals with a capacity of up to 7,057 beds, serving 26 million people, were supported through the payment of salaries to about 10,900 health workers and by covering the running cost of the hospitals
* 136,265 babies were delivered in the 33 ICRC-supported hospitals
* 4,018,552 patients benefited from medical care - Out Patient Department (OPD) and In
Patient Department (IPD) - at the 33 ICRC - supported hospitals
* 4,165 students enrolled in different technical training programmes at the 9 Ghazanfar
Health Institutes of Science supported by the ICRC. As many as 171 students, mainly nurses and midwives, graduated.
* 15 staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were trained at 1 basic first-aid training session in Kabul and 15 first-aid kits were handed over to them
* 341 medical emergency kits were donated to hospitals and primary-health-care centres
that treat victims of mass casualty incidents, helping 595 wounded people
* 9 public and ARCS primary-health-care centres were renovated, providing patients with
better access to the OPD Mirwais Regional Hospital in Kandahar, with a capacity of 620 beds, was connected to a dedicated emergency power line of the public grid to improve its working condition and provide a stable electricity supply Farah Provincial Hospital with a capacity of 120 beds was supported by an improved safe water supply system.
