ICRC humanitarian response operations in Sudan- July 2026 update

The conflict in Sudan has created the world’s largest displacement crisis, with severe consequences for neighboring countries such as Chad and South Sudan. Intensified fighting and rapidly shifting front lines have left civilians facing widespread destruction, limited access to shelter and food, and the collapse of essential services. More than eleven million people have been displaced, and markets, water systems, and hospitals have repeatedly been damaged or destroyed, leaving communities with extremely limited access to basic health care.

Despite these conditions, the ICRC remains present and operational across Sudan, scaling up emergency response activities with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society. Our teams continue supporting primary health care facilities—including mobile clinics—to manage emergencies such as cholera outbreaks and large influxes of displaced people. Front line hospitals regularly supported by the ICRC deliver life saving treatment for wounded patients, while other facilities receive surgical kits and targeted assistance to cope with surges in casualties. The ICRC surgical team has been working at Atbara Teaching Hospital since 2025, improving access to emergency surgical care and strengthening trauma services. During last two years, more than 3.3 million people gained improved access to safe water, and over 154,000 people received emergency care through ICRC supported hospitals.

Together with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, we also provided rehabilitative care—including physiotherapy and prosthetics—to more than 4,000 people and supported over 310,000 people during outbreaks of cholera, malaria, and other diseases.

In early 2026, the Atbara surgical team treated around thirty patients and helped convert the hospital to solar power to ensure continuity of services. Another surgical team was deployed to Al Fashir, providing emergency care to more than one hundred wounded people. Patients with physical disabilities were referred for rehabilitative services, hospital staff received training in emergency and trauma care, weapon bearers learned first aid, and potential first responders were introduced to the basic principles of the Health Care in Danger initiative.

Alongside these health activities, the ICRC carried out water and habitat projects across Sudan, converting water systems to solar power, constructing generators, and repairing hand pumps. In 2026, these efforts improved access to clean water and sanitation for approximately fifty three thousand conflict affected people.

The ICRC and the Sudanese Red Crescent Society continue responding where few others can, bringing essential care, protection, and dignity to communities facing extreme hardship.
