Our work in Israel and the occupied territories - July 2026 update

by INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS

The consequences of the hostilities since October 2023 have left every hospital in Gaza reporting damage or destruction, while health facilities continue to face severe constraints, including limited access to water, electricity, essential medicines, medical supplies, and specialized equipment needed to function effectively.

In May 2024, in response to escalating humanitarian needs, the ICRC—together with 14 National Red Cross Societies and the Palestine Red Crescent Society—established the Red Cross Field Hospital (RCFH) in Rafah. Initially conceived as a temporary trauma care facility, it has become one of the few remaining functional health structures in southern Gaza. Its outpatient department now serves as a primary health care provider for the surrounding population, offering essential services in an environment where most medical facilities can no longer operate.

Over the past two years, the RCFH has frequently operated at more than double its intended capacity, with medical teams working continuously under extraordinary pressure. Despite these challenges, the hospital has delivered more than 11,300 surgeries, provided 250,000 medical consultations, safely delivered over 1,200 babies, conducted 19,200 physiotherapy sessions, and facilitated more than 1,500 blood transfusions. Located just 100 meters from the sea and now surrounded by camps, the facility faces constant environmental strain—salt air, sand, winter conditions, limited space, and severe restrictions on importing replacement items such as tents, generators, and water units all accelerate wear and tear.

To ensure continued operations, urgent refurbishment and replacement of worn or damaged equipment are underway. In view of ongoing and anticipated medical needs—and at the request of the authorities—the ICRC and its partners have extended the RCFH programme for an additional two years, through 2027.

Your solidarity helps sustain this critical lifeline for communities facing overwhelming humanitarian needs. Thank you for making a difference.
