Since October 2023, Lebanon has faced its worst humanitarian crisis in decades. Conflict, combined with a prolonged economic collapse, has devastated communities. Airstrikes damaged critical infrastructure and displaced nearly 900,000 people within Lebanon. Another 625,000 fled to Syria in search of Safety.
A ceasefire in late November 2024 offered a vital window for humanitarian response. Yet, widespread destruction and supply chain disruptions left many without access to water, health care, shelter or education. Even as families began returning home, they faced immense challenges rebuilding their lives amid deepening poverty and a collapsing healthcare system.
The IRC has been providing life-changing support to both Lebanese citizens and refugees since 2021. In response to the September 2024 escalation of conflict, the IRC swiftly launched a comprehensive emergency response. Working alongside local partners, we have been supporting people displaced by conflict with hot meals, cash assistance, shelter materials, hygiene kits, and lifesaving protection, health and mental health services, reaching tens of thousands of affected people.
Our response in Lebanon is backed by 90 years of emergency response expertise and deep experience working in the Middle East and North Africa region across Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, and Gaza. In more than 40 countries around the world, the IRC carries out high-impact, cost-effective solutions that uplift people affected by crisis.
