On March 28, 2025, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar followed by an aftershock of magnitude 6.4. The earthquake and aftershocks caused widespread destruction across central Myanmar, including Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing, Bago, and Shan regions. More than 3,750 people are confirmed dead, over 5,100 injured and 116 are reported missing.
UNICEF teams are on the ground in the hardest-hit areas, working with partners and local responders to assess needs and deliver emergency assistance. The earthquake has damaged homes, schools, health facilities and water supply infrastructure, which disrupted critical services for children. Nearly 1,600 houses, 670 monasteries, 60 schools, and three bridges are reported to be damaged. Landslides and collapsed roads have left many communities without electricity and mobile connectivity.
These earthquakes exacerbate the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. Even before the earthquake, 20 million people, including over 6.5 million children were in need of humanitarian assistance, with one in three displaced people a child.
UNICEF needs your support to continue its outreach for children and families. Soon after the earthquake, UNICEF has:

-Reached 400,000 people with health and nutrition support
-Delivered child protection services to over 19,000 children
-Distributed over 7,700 child protection kits
-Delivered cash transfers to over 15,000 people
Now more than ever, your support is critical to continuing UNICEF’s work in emergencies.
