After 14 years of conflict, Syria’s security situation remains fragile, with more than 16.5 million people in need—more than ever before. Economic collapse and prolonged displacement have pushed over 90% of Syrians into poverty and despite soaring needs, the humanitarian response remains critically underfunded. According to needs assessments conducted by the IRC, three in every five surveyed Syrian households have been displaced more than one time, with some displaced as many as 20 times during the conflict. More than 16.5 million Syrians are in need of humanitarian assistance within the country, more than at any time since the crisis began. The abrupt suspension of US-funded aid programs has left already vulnerable Syrians without access to food, water, healthcare, and protection services, further exacerbating an already dire crisis.
This crisis demands the urgent attention of the world’s leaders and the public alike.
Through programs coordinated by our teams based in Iraq, Jordan and Syria, the IRC provides emergency and long-term services to displaced families and Syrians who have stayed in their homes.
The IRC is the only international nongovernmental aid organization whose relief and development efforts address the needs of displaced families inside Syria, as well as the needs of Syrian refugees and host communities living in the neighboring countries of Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkiye; in Europe; and in the United States.
Since 2012, the IRC has delivered critical, lifesaving support to Syrians impact by conflict and crisis. Since 2021, the IRC has been predominantly responding to needs in the northern part of the country. Our response is delivered directly and through local partner organizations, with a focus on providing lifesaving health, including support for health facilities and mobile health teams offering critical trauma care, as well as primary, reproductive, and mental health services. The IRC also delivers counseling and protection services for women and children, particularly survivors of violence, along with cash assistance, early recovery and early childhood development support.
The IRC is one of the few international humanitarian organizations with deep operational reach in northwest Syria, supporting over 1 million people annually through health, protection and economic services. Due to increased access following the end of the conflict, the IRC is now able to access populations throughout Syria and aims to expand to new areas in the coming months.
Your support to the IRC in response to the crisis in Syria helps ensure that we can:
• Operate clinics and mobile teams to provide lifesaving trauma services, primary and reproductive care, dialysis and essential drugs; ensure the uninterrupted flow of supplies and equipment to healthcare providers; and integrate mental health into our primary care services.
• Provide emergency cash assistance to help displaced families meet their immediate needs.
• Provide education, counseling and protection services for thousands of children in camps and communities. Reunite unaccompanied children with their families or identify safe caretakers.
• Create safe spaces for women and girls that offer services for survivors of violence, as well as counseling and jobs skills training.
• Build refugee families’ economic stability with job training, apprenticeships, and small business support.
Your gift allows us to deliver comprehensive aid to people affected by humanitarian crises and will be used where and when most needed.
