On July 24th, Typhoon Gaemi slammed into the northern part of the Philippines as a Category 4 typhoon, with sustained winds of 144 mph, heavy rains and significant storm surges across the region. So far, 40 fatalities have been reported, hundreds have been injured and 612,000 have been displaced due to devastating flooding.
International Medical Corps has been working in the Philippines since 2013 and has responded to some of the deadliest hurricanes to strike the region, including Typhoon Haiyan, Typhoon Hagupit and Typhoon Mangkhut.
Following the crisis, International Medical Corps conducted a rapid needs assessment and joined the immediate response of Barangay Health Unit (BHU) of San Isidro in Montalban, Rizal, providing staffing support to deliver essential care through medical consultations and distribution of medication to patients.
As the situation continues to develop, we anticipate needs to be high and are working to address them by:
• distributing additional medical commodities and NFIs;
• providing clinician surge capacity for two weeks to meet surging health needs in affected areas;
• delivering generator fuel to help power hospitals and health facilities; and more.
