The ICRC has carried out its humanitarian work in Lebanon through several periods of armed conflict, including the 1975–1990 civil war. Currently we are helping to meet the rapidly growing needs of people who have fled war and of the communities hosting them.
The 2024 escalation of conflict has put further strain on overloaded communities in the south of Lebanon. We are deeply concerned that families are struggling to find food, clean water, or the lifesaving care as they return to their homes. Providing emergency response, we have scaled up relief efforts supporting health facilities and water authorities, distributing essentials, and helping families stay connected.
Families returning to southern Lebanon face damaged homes and the threat of weapon contamination. The ICRC prioritizes raising awareness of risks and promoting safe practices, urging the population to report suspicious objects to the Lebanon Mine Action Center.
Addressing humanitarian needs remains a priority. In collaboration with the Lebanese Red Cross, the ICRC continues providing health services, protection, and assistance, adapting activities to meet the most pressing needs.
The ICRC's efforts are focused on:
• Access to Essential Services: Restored critical facilities like water and power systems, benefiting 701,000 individuals with safe water and providing 435,275 liters of fuel to hospitals and health centers.
• Healthcare Support: Re-equipped 33 primary healthcare centers and 33 hospitals with medications and wound-care materials; supplied 23 emergency medical service centers with medical supplies; supported 280 patients in physical rehabilitation centers with mobility and walking aids; and benefited 625 critical hospitalized patients with weapon-wounded kits.
• Recovery Measures: Rebuilt infrastructure, provided essential items, and offered cash or material assistance for livelihood support. Families received 40,305 food parcels, 38,080 hygiene kits, 6,460 kitchen sets, and 70,110 blankets.
